Volcan-Masaya - a.k.a. Masaya Volcano
In 1979, Masaya became Nicaragua's first National Park, named Masaya Volcano National Park (Parque Nacional Volcan-Masaya).
The National Park has an area of 54 square kilometers and includes two volcanoes and five craters. It is the only volcano in the western hemisphere where you are able to drive to the rim.
This volcano is one of the most active in Nicaragua and you can see and smell the sulfurous gas from miles away.
Also for visitors, there are hiking trails, a visitors centre, and a nature museum. It is located relatively close to Granada or Managua and makes for a great day trip. There are many day-tours available for you to choose from.
In the town of Masaya there are two great markets. In one of them you can buy everything from live poultry to clothes and fast-food. The other one, called the old market, is quieter and more modern, catering mainly to tourists.
