Exploring Nicaragua - a helpful guide

Exploring Nicaragua

Touring Nicaragua. Local bus routes? Perhaps. That depends on you.

Once you arrive at your destination, chances are you will either be escorted to a tour bus, you will catch a domestic flight to your destination, or you will be visiting a car rental company.

Most major car rental companies have locations in Nicaragua and are located close to an airport.

If you want to see the “real” Nicaragua, then renting a car is just about the only way to go.

The road system in Nicaragua is pretty much the same as in most Central American countries, that is to say bumpy! The major route is the Pan American highway and it is one of the few paved highways in the country.

Road signs are few and far between and this is where a good map becomes invaluable.

You should always carry a copy of your passport when driving and insurance is mandatory for foreigners.

One other thing: you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP). These are not difficult to obtain and you can purchase them at your local Automobile Association. In the United States (American Automobile Association), Canada (Canadian Automobile Association), and Europe (the country specific Automobile Association).

And if you don’t want to rent a car?

There are lots of other ways of getting around in Nicaragua.

Some of my traveling friends have rented a car and a guide for their holidays. This is an excellent way to get to know the country as well. Your guide will be familiar with the roads and attractions and can be an invaluable resource.

Of course, you can always use the local bus system or taxis. Both are usually inexpensive ways to see more of Nicaragua.
