Laguna-Apoyo - a magnificant volcanic crater lake

Set deep in the belly of an ancient crater is a gorgeous lake close to the city of Granada. 20,000 years ago the region’s largest volcano erupted leaving a huge freshwater reservoir.

It was named Apoyo by the indigenous people and is believed to have special healing powers.

The lake is clean and blue, measuring 48 square kilometers and 200 meters at the deepest point. The water is refreshingly cool to swim in.

Most of the lake is protected and undeveloped although a developer has bought some shore side land and is starting to develop a condo complex. Now is the time to see Laguna de Apoyo before it becomes over-developed.

There are two hostels on the lake, one is the Monkeys Hut (well recommended) and the other is the Crater’s Edge.

The laguna located only 20 minutes drive from either Granada or Masaya and makes for a great day trip
